About Varicose Veins
What causes varicose veins?
Normal veins carry blood from the legs to the heart and contain tiny valves to prevent reflux, or backward blood flow when standing. In varicose veins, the valves do not close properly, leading to reverse blood flow, increased pressure and dilation of the vein.
What are the symptoms of varicose veins?
Varicose veins are covered by tiny nerves. Dilation of the veins can cause pain, itching, numbness or a sensation of aching or numbness. Symptoms are usually worse after prolonged standing but can also happen at night. Varicose veins can also be a cosmetic concern.
Are varicose veins dangerous?
Most varicose veins are not medically dangerous but are treated to relieve pain or improve cosmetic appearance. However some varicose veins can lead to skin irritation, ulceration or blood clots.
What are the options for treating varicose veins?
Most veins can me comfortably treated in the office under local anesthesia. Large veins in the thigh may be treated with ELT (endovenous laser therapy) or VNUS closure (radiofrequency closure). We use the Dornier 940 nm diode laser (www.dornier.com) and the VNUS closure catheter (www.vnus.com) procedure. These procedures involve placing a small catheter into the vein under local anesthesia which then closes the vein. Small spider veins can be treated with either injections (sclerotherapy) or the Dornier Skinpulse Laser to close the veins. Slightly larger veins may be treated with foam sclerotherapy or microphlebectomies through tiny skin incisions.
What to Expect on Your First Visit
You will be seen by a vascular specialist who will take a history and perform a physical examination, focusing on the veins in your legs. An ultrasound examination of the leg veins might be performed to help map the source of the varicose veins. Our practice accepts most insurance plans.
